The 12th Regional Conference on Geoconservation and
ProGEO Working Group 1 Annual Meeting on

GEOLOGICAL HERITAGE IN THE SOUTH-EASTERN EUROPE

5-9 September 2007, Ljubljana, Slovenia

ORGANISERS

The conference and annual meeting are organised in collaboration with:

Institute for Nature Conservation of Slovenia,

Environmental Agency of Slovenia,

Geological Survey of Slovenia,

Slovenian Geological Society,

ProGEO – European Association for Conservation of Geological Heritage

Slovenian Geological Society is a professional association of geologists of Slovenia aimed at bringing forward geosciences in the social context and sustainable development and providing balance between people and environment. Among priority tasks there is support for development of geology, for better public understanding of the Planet Earth and life on it and encourage the use of geological knowledge related to society’s needs and its care for the Earth.

The Republic of Slovenia Institute for Nature Conservation is the governmental professional organisation whose mission is to conserve Slovene nature in the broadest sense. Among key tasks are selection and evaluation of natural heritage, management of related data bases, monitoring natural heritage, advising owners of natural heritage and implementation of conservation measures for nationally important natural heritage. The Institute strives for sustainable use of renewable and non-renewable natural resources. In providing its services it is aimed at professionalism, objectivity and dialogue with key stakeholders.

The Environmental Agency of Republic of Slovenia is the government authority of the Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning. Among its priority tasks is analysing and forecasting natural phenomena and environmental processes, nature conservation, monitoring and reporting on the environment and public awareness of the environment. The Agency provides quality environmental data, protection of natural resources and sustainable development. Its knowledge is transferred to related institutions across the world; the Agency influences environmental culture and promotes conditions for a healthy environment.

Geological Survey of Slovenia is a public research institution with a basic goal to provide for better knowledge of the geological structure of Slovenia which lies at the conjunction of three major tectonic units that has caused the great geological diversity of the country. A greater knowledge of geology is essential for many social needs. The knowledge of the geological phenomena is the base for natural and cultural heritage protection.

ProGEOThe European Association for the Conservation of the Geological Heritage is working to promote the protection of Europe's typical and important landscapes, as well as its many-faceted inheritance of geological phenomena, all of the greatest scientific and cultural importance. Europe was the birthplace of the science of geology. Its rocks, fossils, minerals and landforms have inspired the great figures of World geology over the last two centuries. They are still an inspiration to modern researchers and students at all levels, and have a fascination for a wider public. Our knowledge of the Earth – of the landscapes around us, of volcanic activity and of the building of mountains, of the evolution of life, of the ascent of Man, and of the creation of all the mineral resources on which our culture depends – is based on an understanding of essential rock and landform localities. It is vital that this inheritance be conserved.

All the member organisations are aim to develop expertise and solutions (including technical, organisational, education sense and formulating relevant standards and policies) in the field of new trends related to sustainable development; to strive for acknowledgement and implementation of sustainable development standards; and to promote recommendations within national policies which contribute to harmonious coexistence of the human race in the natural environment.
